Vacation with My 3 Kids

Summer VacationI spent the last week down in Gulf Shores Alabama.  As usual I brought my bike with us.  I have taken my bike onjust about every vacation I have been on.  My wife calls the bike our third child.

You would think that a vacation would mean exactly that, but my goal on vacation is not to loose any fitness and gain too much weight.

While on vacation, I was able to get 3 rides and 3 runs in.   The heat and humidity are pretty brutal down there. I started off pretty good on my first run but ended up with GI problems on the way back.  I probably got 4 miles in but there was a lot of walking involved.  The first ride I was able to get in 70 miles, getting rained on left and right.  The second run did not end up much better.  I ran out 3 miles and planned on doing some temp on the way back but after 2 intervals I started having GI problems again.  I have made it all year and have not had problems.  It must have been all the crappy golden food they have down there.  After that I learned my lesson.  I tried to watch what I ate.  Only native foods.

My second ride was short, 30 miles.  Nothing exciting, I think I was in a rush to get to the beach. The next day I laced up the shoes again and headed out for 30 minutes, I felt strong and didn’t not have the poops!  You really need to watch what you eat.  I did one final ride to the Navel Museum and racked up 53 miles. I probably could have made it a little further, but I forgot to put on sunscreen, and didn’t want to push my morning luck.

The vacation in Gulf Shores had ended.  But I had one more day off at home.  You have got to have that extra day to get back into the swing of thing.  I had a lot of free time.  My day started off with a 7 mile run.  I did 3 miles out as a warm up.  Then I did 3 x 1:30 with 30 recovery, 3 x 3:00 with 1:00 recovery all at tempo.  Shortly after the run I headed to the Club South and put in 2000 yards.  500 warm up, 2 x 50, 2 x 100, 2 x 150, 2 x 200, 500 warm down.  My swim wasn’t totally on form.  I had over a week off and was worried.

Later, after dinner, I found myself with nothing to do.  I cleaned off my bike from the trip and decided to go for a short ride to Salisbury.  6 miles out I got a flat.  The road was terrible.  I fixed it and headed back.   I had enough.

What a way to end a vacation and to prepare for the next two weekends of races.  Evergreen, and Iron Abe here I come!
