Women’s Distance Festival the Perfect Recipe

[Results] [Photos] Over 600 ladies participated in the 30th annual Women’s Distance Festival.  This race seems to get bigger and better every year.  Speaking with race director Susan Helm she indicated that she tries to promote an experience rather than an event.  This seems to be the perfect recipe for success.  Participants enjoyed not only the 2 mile run/walk around Washington Park but the whole experience.  From the pre-race DJ, vendor booths, and aerobics warm-up to the race/walk itself, to the post-race entertainment no detail was over looked.  The ambiance of the morning was definitely Festival (as the name indicates).

One of the highlights of the day was seeing the winner cross the finish line in just over 11:00.  Kelly Fox scorched the Washington Park course in a manner not even seen by male competitors.  Of course, another highlight for most of the huge crowd was watching the kid’s races.  The size of fields for the children’s races looked doubled from last year.  They were huge.  Matt Minder did a good job controlling the mob and every participant got the same medal as the Abraham Lincoln Memorial Half Marathon.  The medals were bigger than some of the kids.  The pirates handing out the medals was also a nice touch.

Again the volunteer effort was phenomenal.  Another quality event for women of all fitness levels.  Look for it next year.  And when you see Susan tell her you liked the flowers and candles in the port-o-potties.
