2010 Fat Ass 5K

Word on the street was that over 1,500 people participated in the 3rd annual Fat Ass 5k.  By the looks of the stream of the runners/walkers over the downtown streets of Springfield I don’t doubt the claim.

The weather was crisp and windy.  Temperatures were in the low 50’s and the wind was gusting around 30 mph.  In the sun, buffered by the taller buildings, the temperature was pleasant.  In the shade, or when the wind was swirling, the temperature was quite cold.  This didn’t stop the enthusiasm of the participants, spectators, or organizers.  Music was heard throughout the course.  There were the usual ice cream, beer (I think Stag), doughnuts, and corn dogs stops.  The PA was even doing his best to incite the crowd by sarcastically making fun of all the “Fat Asses” that walked or ran by.  He spared no one.  Reminiscent of the clown at the dunk tank at the State Fair a few moons back.

The after party lived up to its reputation.  The block of 7th street just in front of Celtic Mist was closed to traffic after the race.  Participants and volunteers were greeted with food, fun, and drink after the race.  A local band entertained the crowd.  Fun was had by all.

This event continues to grow in popularity and professionalism.  It gets bigger every year.  Congratulations to all the participants.  Thank you to all the volunteers.  And a HardyBreed finger bang to the organizers.  Hope to see you again next year.
