Please Help - Test Results
November 17, 2008 by Dan
I need some help from someone with a little knowledge out there. I had a chlolesterol screening, and don’t understand the results.
My HDL (good cholesterol) is 73. My LDL is 122 which accouding to the chart below is low. But now here is the kicker….My Cholesterol is at 212, which is HIGH. What gives? Where does the Cholesterol number come from. I added my HDL and LDL togeter and it doesn’t equal 212.
So how can my HDL be high and my LDL be low and them my Cholesterol number is off the charts bad….
Can someone explain this to me before I have to go on some weird fad diet….

I found this through google. It was a response from an MD and the person was basically asking the same thing. In general and for what it is worth.
“What is not accounted for in a LDL/HDL ratio is the triglycerides (i.e. fat content in the blood). Even though the ratio is low, the fact that the total cholesterol is high suggests that the triglycerides are high. High triglycerides are a negative predictor of cardiac risk.”
Here is a link to the question and answer with even more detail… http://answers.google.com/answers/threadview/id/155701.html
My trig are 87. That is almost half of the recommended???
I’m not a doctor…but what I have read about cholesterol is that you want your LDL under 130 and your LDL/HDL ratio to be around a 3. Your results show you have met these targets. A LDL/HDL ratio of 5 is suppose to be an indicator for an average risk of heart disease. Looks like your results are fine…but you should have your doctor translate the #’s for you.
Ok, here is the formula: total cholesterol is calculated by adding your HDL + LDL + VLDL or 73+122+17=212. My total cholesterol to HDL ratio was good, but she said An ideal LDL is less than 100.
I probably need to cut the Jimmy Johns BBQ chips out of my diet….
