Lost Bridge Trail

Week 6, workout #2 can be either a 15K or half-marathon, but either one must be run at race pace.  Recently I have felt that my longer runs have not been fast enough; just slugging through the motions.  So today I decided to run the Lost Bridge Trail, a paved bike trail on the east side of town.  It is tree-lined so sheltered from the wind, exactly 5 miles so I would get in 10 miles total, and … [Read more...]

Old School

I headed out the door to run workout 1 of week 6.  This consists of 3 x 2 mile runs at marathon pace with 1/2 mile recovery between intervals.  I decided to leave the Garmin at home and run old school style; without GPS.  It was my usual 7 mile course and I knew all the mile markers so I was just going to do 3 intervals without knowing my pace but knowing the distance.  I was feeling good so I set … [Read more...]

Tour of California

WOW! I have never been so psyched for a race on American soil since the days of the Tour de Trump. Sunday marks the prologue of the 8-stage, 650 mile Amgen Tour of California (TOC). This is the 3rd year for this UCI ranked race but never (in my mind) has the field been so stacked with exciting riders and teams. There has been the Coors Classic, the Tour of America, the Tour de Trump, and the … [Read more...]

Cheeseburger With A Side Of Guilt

Haven't trained in 2 days.  Went out to eat with the family.  Had 3 beers and ate a bacon cheeseburger.  Got home and felt sooo guilty I rode the trainer for 30 minutes.  Not sure if there was any training benefit but at least I burned off half of what I ingested and don't feel as guilty. … [Read more...]

Improv

I felt pretty good today considering yesterday was the longest I had run in a year.  I think the main reason I felt decent was the fact that I have started wearing thick socks when I run.  This has prevented blisters and hasn't left my feet sore the next day.  I am preferential toward Descente.  Today was kind of weird because I had no plans for how I was going to workout.  So I improved.  I … [Read more...]

10:00 At The Curb

Danoh and I met at our usual spot this morning.  An earlier start than normal but we wanted to get started on what was going to be a long day on our feet.  The temperature was rising and would eventually top out at 47 degrees.  The wind was out of the west at around 15 mph.  We ran today because tomorrow the temperature is expected to reach a high of 9 degrees, brrrr!  Anyway, this was workout 2 … [Read more...]

IU vs. UI

Another 21:00 workout.  After I put the kids to bed I hopped on the trainer and watched the second half of my alma mater (University of Illinois) play the #13 ranked Indiana Hoosiers.  It was a heartbreaking loss for my Fighting Illini in double overtime.  30 minutes of moderate effort followed by 3 sets of 15 crunches on the therapy ball and I felt pretty good.  It's time to get the case down to … [Read more...]

PTO

33 degrees and sleeting with a 19 mph wind out the west.  Ahhhh, the Midwest in February.  I took the day off of work and was heading out for workout 1 of week 5 in our training program.  After 2 or 3 days of temperatures above freezing most of the snow had melted but a light dusting occurred this morning.  The sidewalks were passable but slushy.  Occasionally I would have to run on the road for a … [Read more...]

Never Felt So Good

WOOHOO!  I finally got the replacement parts back for my Trek Cyclops trainer.  I rode the trainer for 30 minutes.  It never felt so good to sit in one place and sweat like a two-peckered billy goat.  I actually missed the damn thing. … [Read more...]

vomitorium

Workout 2 of week 4 was painful.  Secondary to the weather outside being frightful Danoh and I decided to do the 5K at race pace indoors on the treadmill.  I had hoped for a 20:30-21:00 minute run but this turned out to be a 22:28 minute run.  Man, it sucked!  I haven't been that close to blowing chunks in a long time.  The treadmill seemed anaerobically harder than on the road.  My leg speed … [Read more...]
